Wildfire 1972-1984 This collection of Michael Murpheys work is from his earliest period, when he was hanging out with Jerry Jeff Walkers Lost Gonzo Band and issuing some of the most forward-thinking, philosophical, cosmic cowboy music of the outlaw era. Michael Murphey was no outlaw. The tracks from his first three albums - Geronimos Cadillac, Cosmic Cowboy Souvenir, and Blue Sky - Night Thunder, where the mega-smash Wildfire originally came from - are the most satisfying. The cuts from these albums - such as the title track from Geronimo, Natchez Trace, Alleys of Austin, Cosmic Cowboy, Boy From the Country, and What Am I Doin Hangin Around? - reflect an artist who is looking to widen his path, searching restlessly through the country, rock, and blues music he loves for a sound that embodies them all but stays true to the spirit of the West. Its as if Murphey were looking to become a cosmic cowboy rather than already seeing himself as the embodiment of the ghosts of mythical western figures he did later. The music from the early records is wild and untamed, full of experimentation and raw fire. Even Wildfire and Carolina in the Pines embody the seekers vision, although its more clo

Cowboy Christmas II This is not a new album. In fact, it was released back in 1991. We admit to being remiss in not reviewing it long before now. But, this is the best collection of cowboy Christmas music that weve ever heard. Michael Martin Murphey has assembled an ensemble cast of top-quality performers to deliver a poignant Christmas message. To open, Murphey sings I heard The Bells On Christmas Day, while cowboy poet Waddie Mitchell recites a Bruce Kiskaddon poem. Next, Murphey sings Jolly Old St. Nicholas, as background for Waddie Mitchells recitation of his own poem The Christmas Letter. The third selection is a portion of a Kiskaddon poem, recited by Mitchell, that leads us into an absolutely beautiful song Christmas On The Line, sung and co-written by Murphey. Theres a real cowboy melody and rhythm to this fine tune. Next up are two more traditional offerings, Sleigh Ride, and Jingle Bells, sung by Murphey and Suzie Bogguss. These are followed by The Christmas Trail, a Badger Clark poem set to music by Don Edwards and performed by Edwards and Murphey. One of the most fun songs is Merry Texas Christmas You All, one Murphey learned off of an old Ernest Tubb album. Youll feel

Cowboy Songs Three-Rhymes of the Renegades There are some great classic cowboy songs and ballads on this album, including the duet with the legendary Marty Robbins on Big Iron, Chris LeDoux on Strawberry Roan, Hal Ketchum on Frank James Farewell, Ryan Murphey on Roses and Thorns, and Bill Miller on Belle Starr. The Colonies became the United States of America because of renegades who opposed monarchy. Since that time, Americans have thought of themselves as rebels fighting for the underdogs, for the rights of the individual. Perhaps the most controversial right established in our nation is the constitutional guarantee of the Right To Bear Awmas. The cowboy image is an indelible stamp on the American mind and the world view of Americans. In imagination and myth, a cowboy always wears a gun or brandishes a rifle. The real cowboy of history and today derives from the livestock industry. In that line of work, there is seldom a need for gunplay, therefore, the presence of the gun is optional and prowess with a gun is not a required skill of the working cowboy. Though few cowboys have been gunfighters, most outlaws of the old west were cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. The rhymes written a
